ARIAIL: Pesky billboards

Here’s a new cartoon by Robert Ariail that riffs on a ban of digital billboards by the Town of Mount Pleasant, which now is battling a lawsuit from a billboard company.  It first was published in our sister newspaper, the Charleston City Paper.  Love it?  Hate it? What do you think:  feedback@statehousereport.com.

I’ve always felt that the digital billboards, most of which I have seen along interstate highways, could be hazardous as a distraction from safe driving. From year of digital and internet exposure, our brains (or at least mine) seem to be geared to want to see what comes next. I have found myself slowing down or turning my head to try to see the next screen pop up.

I wonder if these communities fighting the digital billboards have studied the difference in accidents before and after the installation of these distracting signs.

Personally I try not to look at them all anymore. Just to be on the safe side.
