This close-up of a hand-colored etching by English naturalist Mark Catesby is part of his two-volume treatise that was on private display last week at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. Starting May 12 in Charleston as reported by our sister publication, the Gibbes Museum of Art will host an exhibition of Catesby’s 18th Century watercolors from the Royall Collection in England. I have a 40 foot Magnolia that I voluntarily planted the day I graduated from (the real) USC.
It’s beautiful and when I see a blossom I’m happy. However… after the blossom comes the seed pod. Thats’s OK too. And then…about 50-60 empty pods fall and fill my driveway. I have to rake 3 or 4 times a month.
So beauty is in the beholder, but always be aware there is usually a COST.
So to put it simply things that appear nice can cause you to get complacent. Watch out for what happens after the beauty, it’s not all that you thought it was.
