Smithsonian.  Thank you for recognizing the civil rights leadership and contributions by Esau Jenkins and the Progressive Club on Johns Islands in the new museum devoted to African American history.

State Supreme Court.  Hats off for refusing to dump a request to end judicial oversight of a ruling on a 23-year-old education equity lawsuit.  Maybe this will make the legislature get a little more serious in education funding reforms.  More.

Aerospace cluster.  The economic impact of the state’s aerospace industry is estimated to be $19 billion a year, up $2 billion since 2014.  More.

In the middle

Domestic violence.  It’s outstanding that the state’s domestic violence rate has dropped, but remember:  We’re still fifth highest.  Too many women are killed here by men.

Nettles.  Former U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles, a Democrat, has been hired by the S.C. House Republican Caucus to help it respond to State Law Enforcement Division requests from an ongoing corruption probe.  Talk about interesting bedfellows!  More  |  The corruption probe continues.

Thumbs down

Students and college.  It’s sad that we still see news stories about how the majority of South Carolina’s high school students aren’t ready for college, despite increases on the ACT exam.  More.

Nuclear safety.  An internal review of a Columbia nuclear fuel factory shows problems on how the site has been managed for atomic safety.  Shouldn’t make anyone feel very comfortable.  More.

Google.  The tech giant wants 1.5 millions of fresh water a day to cool its servers, but Mount Pleasant officials are smart to be worried that it will have too big of an impact on an aquifer.  Hey Google guys — you’re smart.  Figure out another solution.

Overtime.  South Carolina is one of 21 states to challenge a federal order to extend overtime pay for millions.  Of course it is.  But it shouldn’t be.
