This colorful mural by artist Tripp Derrick Barnes was unveiled May 13 during a ceremony along St. Philip Street in downtown Charleston. It features a large image of the face of the late state Sen. and Rev. Clementa Pinckney as well as nine doves representing the nine people killed last year at Emanuel AME Church in a shooting that shocked the nation. The mural also includes a quote by Pinckney: “Across the South, we have a deep appreciation of history — we haven’t always had a deep appreciation of each other’s history.” In the photo, you can see Charleston May John Tecklenburg at the microphone surrounded by dignitaries.
