Associate Justice Donald Beatty says it’s an honor to be nominated by President Obama for a federal judgeship — something in the works for a couple of years — but he admits he’s focused on being the next state Supreme Court Chief Justice. According to tradition, the senior associate generally is elected by lawmakers to become chief justice when there is a vacancy. While Beatty is senior associate justice, some in the GOP want a different candidate for the top spot on the high courts. More.

CBPP Senior Fellow Elizabeth McNichol argues it is critical that states reverse underinvestment of past years in public infrastructure because failing to do so can hurt a state’s ability to function and grow. “Higher-quality and more efficient infrastructure will boost productivity in states that make the needed investments, lifting long-term economic growth and wages.”
