Gov. Nikki Haley today said she was opposed to plans voiced by some legislators to generate additional state revenue by allowing more nuclear waste at a landfill in Barnwell, S.C.
Statehouse Report outlined the issue in its March 6 news report.
According to a statement this morning by the governor:
“We need to let the state know, we need to let the legislature know, where we are on this. I remember dealing with this as a legislator several years back, and you know the bottom line is we’ve worked very hard over the last few years to make sure we’ve improved the quality of South Carolina – the quality of the jobs, the quality of the environment, the quality of tourism. Now there’s an opportunity that’s being presented in front of the legislature to be able to take in more nuclear waste from other states, and we just want the legislature to know we don’t want to go in that direction.”
“Additional nuclear waste would be a huge step backwards for the state of South Carolina. Let’s not go down this direction. There are a lot of things we need to be working on right now, and taking in other states’ nuclear waste is not one of them.”
