South Carolina is now the most dangerous state in the country for drunk driving, according to a report from the federal National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In South Carolina, 44 percent of traffic fatalities are caused by drunk driving, while the national average is 31 percent. South Carolina climbed to the dubious number one last year despite there being 13 fewer road deaths than the year prior.
Some groups, such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, are calling for a further beefing up of state drunk-driving laws and preventions. Last year, the state passed a law that requires an ignition interlock system on first-time offenders who registered high blood alcohol levels.
